Detection and defense mechanisms against DDoS attacks: A review Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks is the most challenging problems for network security. The attacker uses large number of compromised hosts to launch attack on victim. Various DDoS defense mechanisms aim at detecting and preventing the attack traffic. The effectiveness depends on the point of deployment. The purpose of this paper is to study various detection and defense mechanisms, their performance and deployment characteristics. This helps in understanding which defense should be deployed under what circumstances and at what locations.
